Recently we sat down with our favorite stylist from Hybrid Salon, Nicole, to discuss the latest trends in hair and makeup and product recommendations. In this first post we’ll focus on hair and next week will be all about makeup.
Hair trends
“I’m getting a lot of requests for a textured up-do with curls. Not so much the sleek up-do anymore, a little looser. Girls just want to have their hair curled and the half-up is something else we’re seeing a lot of now.”
“With brides, but seniors may want to think about it also, little gems that they can clip in or flower headdresses or a jeweled headband.”
The most important thing is to be true to yourself.
“I Like to tell people when they are getting dressed up you still want to feel comfortable. You still want to feel like yourself”.
If you’re not sure what to do with your hair Nicole recommends starting with your outfits. “Put on your dress or outfit, see how you feel, and incorporate hair and makeup into that.”
Another option might be to go with both up and down. “We would want to know this at the salon but we could make the up-do a little looser and they could take it down during the shoot.”
Product recommendations
“A good shampoo and conditioner are the foundation. If there are any kind of hair concerns, I like to look at shampoo and conditioner first. For me personally I like to use Redken Frizz Dismiss because it helps eliminate frizz in my hair. It’s lightweight and doesn’t weigh my hair down.”
Nicole also recommends Iron Shape; a protectant you spray on your hair before you flat iron or curl. “It helps hold the straightening or curl and also protects the hair from heat. You need to have some kind of heat protection on your hair and iron silk is lightweight with nice control and keeps the hair safe.”
Whatever hair style you choose, Dave and I agree with Nicole that the most important factor in having a successful senior portrait session is that you feel comfortable and are true to yourself…
